IMUA: Then and Now

OUR COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE...IMUA

TALES OF OUR JOURNEY

Rooted in the vision and sacrifice of generations past, thriving today as a testament to family legacy.  "Family-created. Family-operated. Family-led."

IMUA Volleyball Club was founded in 1988 by Vincent Rosa, Sr., a highly experienced volleyball coach who wanted to provide boys in the Monterey Peninsula with an opportunity to play volleyball at a high school level. What started as a small group of friends soon grew into a highly competitive team that dominated Northern California volleyball in just a few years. IMUA Volleyball Club's success wasn't only due to the hard work and dedication of its players on the court, It was also built on the love and traditional culture of Hawaii that Coach "Uncle" Vincent Rosa brought to the team. Players, coaches, and their families came together regularly for gatherings and events that strengthened the bonds between them. Even after 20 years, these bonds persist, creating a sense of camaraderie that is unique to IMUA.

Over the years, IMUA Volleyball Club has evolved and competed under different names but its commitment to excellence has never wavered. The club has achieved championship titles in every Northern California Volleyball Association division and Far Western Championships from BB Silver to AA Gold division. Today, IMUA Volleyball Club is one of the top youth and junior indoor and beach volleyball clubs in all of the Central Coast of California. In fact, IMUA has produced more student-athletes to play at the next level than any other volleyball club in the last two decades. We are committed to providing the best service for our volleyball ohana (family) and helping our players succeed both on and off the court.

If you're looking for a volleyball club that is dedicated to helping its players reach their full potential, look no further than IMUA Volleyball Club. Our commitment to excellence, combined with our unique family-oriented approach, creates a supportive and empowering environment for all of our student athletes.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, we welcome you to join our team and become a part of the IMUA ohana-family today.

IMUA Original — Still Leading the Way

The IMUA-Marina boys volleyball program emerged in the late 1980s as one of Northern California’s strongest junior volleyball teams during the early years of organized club competition in the region. At a time when boys club volleyball opportunities were limited, IMUA quickly established itself as a competitive and respected program.

By the 1990 season, IMUA-Marina captured the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) ABC Regional Championship, finishing undefeated in regional play. Contemporary coverage from the NCVA News Net newsletter documented the team’s regional title and identified key contributors including Jason Companion, John Companion, Ruben Zermeno, Pomaikai Bush, Eddie Corpuz, Keoni Ward, Harry Uyeda, and Vince Rosa, Jr. under the leadership of Head Coach Vince Rosa and Assistant Coach Joe Companion.

Local media coverage further highlighted the program’s rise. A February 26, 1991 Monterey County Herald article reported that IMUA-Marina won the United States Volleyball Association Northern California Boys 18-Under Championship after steady improvement over several seasons, including a third-place finish in 1988–1989 and a runner-up finish the following year. The article described the team as one of the top boys volleyball programs in Northern California.

Individual athletes from the IMUA-Marina roster also received recognition during this period. Seaside High School outside hitter Jason Companion was described in local coverage as the team’s primary power hitter and one of its most dynamic offensive players. During this same era, Companion was recognized nationally as a Volleyball Magazine “Fab 50” player during his high school career.

The success of the IMUA-Marina teams from 1988–1992 helped establish a foundation for boys club volleyball development in Monterey County and Northern California. These early teams laid the groundwork for what would become decades of IMUA Volleyball Club programming, athlete development, and regional and national competition.

This period represents the beginning of IMUA Volleyball Club’s legacy — built on community support, multi-school collaboration, and a commitment to developing high-level volleyball athletes in the Monterey Bay region.
